Our 9-11 students studying Italian or Japanese recently had the amazing opportunity to further develop their learning by exploring cultural experiences across McLaren Vale and the Adelaide CBD and on Language Immersion Trips.
Four Italian classes travelled to McLaren Vale for a jam-packed two-day camp experience. “We enjoyed an Italian experience of dancing, playing Italian memory and vocabulary games while also making pizza’s and playing Bocce at the Bocce club,” says Year 9 student Andreas.
The Year 11 students started their trip with a cooking Class at Fine Food Cucina, the students cooked up a storm learning how to make traditional Italian dishes, which included lasagna, pizza, and cannoli. “We learned how to pipe cannoli and gained an understanding of rolling pizza dough, it was my favourite part of the camp” shares Joshua (Year 11).
The Year 9-10 students experienced a range of Italian language activities to further their knowledge at the McLaren Vale Town Hall, followed by a pizza masterclass with Mattia’s Pizzas. Year 9 student Isabella shares “it was interesting to see Matteo making the pizzas, we learned about toppings and how a small dough ball can become a massive pizza”.
“The pizza tasted as good as it looked” adds Hiyad (Year 9).
The students then put their dancing shoes on for a dance-off where they participated in a workshop learning the traditional Tarantella Dance. “I enjoyed learning the different versions of the Tarantella, because I could compare this with the Calabrese Tarantella. It was fun and definitely a highlight of the trip” shares Isabella.
Followed by this, the students visited the McLaren Vale Bocce Club, where they learned about the history of the Bocce Club and how to play the famous game.
To end the trip the students wrote postcards in Italian to friends and family about their trip away to McLaren Vale and enjoyed an incredible 3-course lunch at ‘Our Place’ at Willunga.
“I learned so much about Italian culture on this camp, it was such a great experience, and I’m missing it” says Hiyad.
A group of 42 Year 9-10 Japanese students recently joined a two-day camp experiencing the Japanese culture and traditions in Adelaide CBD.
The students had the opportunity to participate in a cooking class with Sticky Rice Cooking School, “the cooking class displayed true Japanese culture and cuisine” says Stavroula (Year 9).
Portia (Year 9) adds “I love cooking, so the cooking class was really enjoyable and fun, and the traditional food we made tasted amazing”.
The trip continued with a traditional Japanese dinner at Sato Restaurant and a Japanese Movie ‘Your Name’ at East End Cinemas. Year 9 student Jade shares “the movie was the highlight of the camp, I really enjoyed it”.
The trip didn’t end there, with a Kintsugi and Calligraphy Workshop, Taiko Drumming, and Sumo Suits.
“I had a lot of fun on this camp, I loved the food and the different ways we could experience Japanese culture in Adelaide. The activities were interesting and something I had never tried before.”
“It was a very fun camp, and I enjoyed learning so much about Japanese culture and traditions” adds Taylor.
Year 10 student Ethan summarises “I not only learned more about the Japanese culture but I got to experience it with my friends, which I will forever cherish“.
