Nazareth views work experience as a valuable way for students to explore their potential career choices and pathways.
Work experience is not compulsory; however, it is strongly encouraged for students in Years 10, 11, and 12. Work experience allows students to:
Students in Years 10, 11 and 12 can organise to undertake work experience during their school holidays. Work experience can also be organised during exam week for those students who may not have exams, or very few exams.
In certain circumstances where there is a clear pathway intent and interest, and where it relates to a student’s learning in a VET course or SACE subject, students may be able to undertake some days of work experience during term time, however this is subject to negotiation and approval by the College. Where lessons are missed, it is the student’s responsibility to liaise with their teacher and catch up on any learning or assessments.
Students cannot commence work experience without a Workplace Learning Agreement in place! This is because the student will not be covered by insurance unless this Agreement is in place. The Agreement must be processed 2 weeks before the work experience placement commences.
Be pro-active! Students need to source their own work experience placement, and are encouraged to do some research and use their networks to source a work experience host.
Nazareth VET and Careers staff can give guidance and suggestions about which employers to approach and can guide students to do this, but in our experience, employers like it when students approach them directly.
Once a work experience host has been identified, students must initiate a Workplace Learning Agreement.
Make an appointment with Nazareth’s VET and Careers Counsellor.
A Workplace Learning Agreement sets out dates, times, locations, and other requirements for the placement of work experience. It also includes key contacts for the student, parent/guardian, work experience host, and Nazareth.
The student needs to organise for the Workplace Learning Agreement form to be signed by the work experience host, student, parent/guardian and then submit the completed form to the school for the Principal/delegate to sign.
The Workplace Learning Agreement form can be downloaded below, under ‘More Work Experience Information’.
The Agreement must be processed two weeks before the work experience placement commences. Some work experience placements may require a WWCC (Working with Children Check), which can take additional time.
Students must make an appointment to submit their Workplace Learning Agreement to the Careers and Pathways Coordinator for signing.
Appointments are available before and after school, and during recess and lunch. Students are reminded not to book their appointment during their lesson times.
The Workplace Learning Agreement form then becomes a legal contract that sets the school insurance coverage in place. An appropriate risk assessment is completed, and the school provides a contact person who will be in contact with the student and work experience host during the placement.
What do I do if there are changes to the dates in my Workplace Learning Agreement?
It is the responsibility of the student to advise in writing/by email if there are changes or additions to the dates specified in the Workplace Learning Agreement. This is for insurance purposes. Please email [email protected]
