Yaak Yaak joins the NBA Global Academy – Nazareth’s third basketball sensation to receive a scholarship in 6 months.

27.01.21

The NBA’s Global Academy, based at Basketball Australia’s Centre of Excellence at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, is a hub for top male and female prospects internationally. Yaak will enter as a new 2021 Scholarship holder, joining his former Nazareth teammates Fiston Ipassou (CoE) and Aime Rutayisire (NBA GA) who received scholarships in 2020.

Yaak has been an integral member of the Nazareth Open A Basketball team and Nazareth Basketball Academy since Year 9.

“Standing at 210cm, Yaak is an extremely exciting athlete, and this is complemented by his caring and friendly nature” commented Kahli Harmer, Co-Curricular Sports Coordinator and Nazareth Basketball Academy Leader. “We knew this was coming due to his supreme talent. He is a remarkable young man!”

At only 16 years of age, Yaak has an impressive list of achievements, having previously attended the 2019 NBA Development Camp and the 2020 CoE Recruitment Camp. He was also named in the 2019 U16 SA Metro State squad and the U18 SA Metro Boys State Performance Program for 2020.

“Yaak is an elite athlete and a very exciting prospect. He is a genuine lob threat and shot blocker that can make momentum changing plays at either end,” said Adam Caporn, Head Coach at Basketball Australia’s Centre of Excellence. “His length athleticism, combined with great mobility and an ever-improving skill set, makes his future very bright.”

Jeff Sochacki, Head of Campus – Flinders Park, had his own positive statement to add:

“Yaak is a very hard working and talented Nazareth student on and off the court. He is widely admired by staff and students for his sharp wit and naturally high intelligence. Yaak has been very adaptable in terms of his dedication and commitment to the Nazareth Basketball Program and his academic studies. Yaak’s great strength lies in his ability to inspire others and to me, this far outweighs any athletic prowess. He is a natural leader who is most admired for his fantastic personal traits. In this way he is a strong peer model.”

On behalf of Nazareth Catholic Community, we wish Yaak and his family every success in his future endeavours and may God hold him and his family in the palm of his hand.
